Professor Fred Piper (RIP)

Today, we honor and remember a remarkable individual, Fred Piper—a beacon of light in the realms of cryptography and cybersecurity. His departure leaves a void in our hearts and the field he passionately dedicated his life to. Fred’s contributions were not just monumental; they were foundational, setting the stage for what has become a critical aspect of our digital age in the United Kingdom—information security.

Fred’s journey in the academic world was nothing short of inspiring. As the founder of the Information Security Group (ISG) at Royal Holloway, University of London, in 1990, he was at the forefront of establishing cybersecurity as a recognized profession in the UK. This visionary move, coupled with his role in founding the Institute of Information Security Professionals (IISP), now CIISec, demonstrated his commitment to advancing this field.

His tenure as chair of CIISec for 17 years is a testament to his dedication and influence.

What set Fred apart was not just his intellectual prowess but his magnetic personality. With his unmistakable long hair and his evident love for mathematics, he embodied the spirit of a professor who not only taught but inspired. It’s said that he could make any topic, no matter how mundane it might seem, utterly fascinating. This unique ability made him a beloved figure, not just among those who had the privilege of being his students but also among his peers and the wider community.

Fred’s passion for cryptography ignited a similar enthusiasm in countless individuals. He was a pioneer, exploring and elucidating complex concepts with ease and making them accessible to a broader audience. His work laid the groundwork for many to follow in his footsteps, contributing to the growth and development of the cybersecurity domain.

His influence extended beyond academia. Fred played a significant role in advising and guiding government bodies, like GCHQ, in shaping the cybersecurity landscape. His insights and expertise helped mold the profession, ensuring that the UK remained at the cutting edge of digital security. And I can say, without a doubt, that he impacted me considerably and I’d not be where I am in this field if it weren’t for Fred.

As we remember Fred today, we reflect on the incredible legacy he leaves behind—a legacy of knowledge, inspiration, and unwavering dedication to his field. He was a true mentor, whose teachings and vision will continue to influence generations to come. The cybersecurity community, and indeed the world, owes him a debt of gratitude for his pioneering work and for laying the foundation upon which we continue to build.

To Fred, a titan of cryptography and a cherished mentor, your memory will forever be a guiding light for us all. May we strive to honor your legacy through our continued work and dedication to the principles you held dear. Rest in peace, Fred Piper. Your impact is immeasurable, and you will be deeply missed.
